The name Texas comes from the Caddo Native American word for "friends." Formally inducted into the United States as the twenty eighth state on December 29th, 1845, Texas is fondly known as the Lone Star State and is the second largest state in the United States both in terms of population and geographic size. Formerly a territory of Mexico, it is also the only State to have entered the United States by means of a treaty rather than territorial annexation. Texas is a very diverse state which includes not only countless acres of flat desert land, but also ninety mountains which rise above a mile over sea level. Forests cover roughly ten percent of the state. Texas contains many attractions, such as the Johnson Space Center, the Texas State Fair and the Alamo.
